In 2011 UNESCO officially designated April 30 as International Jazz Day in order to highlight jazz and its diplomatic role of uniting people in all corners of the globe. Nowadays Latvian musical environment offers wide range of possibilities for developing qualitative product and bringing it to the world market. There are many high level jazz genre professionals and enthusiasts, jazz community is evolving. The aim of the International Jazz Day Latvia is to show the rich variety and colors of jazz genre in the country as well as give the country and musicians an opportunity to become a part of the international jazz movement.
The events of 2018 will become even more celebratory for several reasons — first of all, it will be an anniversary of the celebration of jazz culture in our country, which is an important date to all jazz community. The second but not the least important reason is that this is also the year when Latvia celebrates its 100th birthday and that is why it is decided to turn to the “jewels” of our jazz community by organizing a concert of National Armed Forces big band, students of Jazeps Vitols Latvian Academy of music concert, once again make the theme of the event dedicated to education, honor the two jazz clubs Riga can be proud of — «Trompete» and «Pashkevich Jazz Club» and organize concerts in other venues as well.
The Jazz Day is brought to Latvia by Wise Music Society, an association that helps audience to discover new music, promising that it’s WISE or really good, and helps bands to discover new audience. These are enthusiasts who have education, experience and knowledge of jazz as well as a wish to achieve goals, making short-term and long-term investment in Latvian jazz music.
